And Al Gore breathed a huge sigh of relief... Many have said it better than The Pen, but it bears repeating here. McCain, even in defeat, remains the better Republican candidate. By cozying up to the far right in order to calm skittish Republicans, George Bush has torpedoed any chance he had of beating Gore in November. Because of the kind of primary campaign he ran, Bush will forever be associated with right wing politics, and in an election year when independents and Democrats seem more afraid of what Republicans would do to Government, than excited about what Democrats would do with Government, those same voters are recoiling from Bush in droves. It is now clear to everyone except the Republican leadership that the party is caught in the following conundrum: McCain cannot win the nomination in August and Bush cannot win the general election in November. Nevertheless, the Republicans continue to keep their eyes shut and their fingers in their ears, preferring, as they often do, to go down to self-righteous defeat rather than win with a candidate they consider bad, simply because the "liberal media," and some Democratic voters, do not. Strong reasoning there, guys. That's like refusing to play with a toy simply because your little brother had it first. At any rate, what we learned from McCain's various losses on Super Tuesday is that, in all likelihood, we will yet see a Bush candidacy and, by extension, a Gore presidency. Too bad, too; even William F. Buckley, who must be dying from having to admit this, thinks McCain could kick ass in the general election: "but there isn't much time for George W. to lose, and it would be fatal to his cause if it were absolutely to settle in the Republican mind that he simply would not have a chance against the chain-sawing of Al Gore. By contrast, John McCain would probably decapitate Mr. Gore in the first round. It is very late for Governor Bush." Face it Republicans, if you've lost Buckley, you've lost the war. Damn shame.
