A Baat story for ya, in his own words:

"I was at McCormick and Schmicks (a nice seafood restaurant) on K street last night and I went to use the bathroom. I hear this guy in the stall on his cell phone, which is funny enough to begin with. But then I hear him say 'Hey, can you pull up my calendar.' I assumed he was talking to his secretary. Then he says, 'who am I having dinner with tonight?' "

For those of you who don't know, Amazon.com is having a Wish List Giveaway. Every day until Dec 15 they are selecting someone at random and giving them everything on their Wish List, up to $5,000. So, head on over there and make a list, and add lots of stuff to it! I started mine today.

I'm not sure where Lars got that information from, but according to Amazon's Holiday Ordering Deadline page, the last day to order with standard shipping is Dec 13, UPS Next Day Air is Dec 20, and "Holiday Delivery" is Dec 23. Interestingly, they don't make a reference to what "holiday" the deadline is referring to. I suppose that's to avoid offending non-Xian's like me.

(Ahh, on further inspection, I see that one of Lars' wishlist items, the outstanding DVD of Fight Club, is currently showing an availability of 4-6 weeks. Perhaps that's where he got his information from. For the other items, there's still time.)

Looking for a great gift idea for the Laaz? I thought so. Well here's a little Amazon.com wish list to help ya out!

Oh, and by the by, Amazon are saying that it's too late to get things delivered in time for Xmas through them, so I recommend you buy stuff elsewhere, perhaps even in person, if yer not into the whole brevity thing.

I'm thinking about asking for an MP3 player for Christmas. Now, given that I know nothing about them except that they eliminate tapes and a lot of weight (good for mountain climbing and jogging), I need all of you to give me advice on what to look for. How much I should spend, how much is enough capacity, which ones seem to work best, etc. Anything you know would be helpful. Head on over to the chat board and help me out.

Kerrie just sent me a really funny Salon article about the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special once aired long ago, and unfortunately, right here in this galaxy. I only vaguely remember this monstrosity, to my detriment.

My firend Alex just told me of a funny thing he did this past Halloween. He's a British chap, this Alex, and a James Bond fan as well. So, each year, he dons his tuxedo and goes as Bond. Well, this year, a very rich friend invited him to a party he was throwing in a penthouse suite at the Mandalay Bay resort and casino in Vegas. Unfortunately for Alex, he knew virtually no one else there, and so eventually, began to get a little bored. After a while, he noticed that the bartender was wearing a very similar tux, but with a name badge. Alex stepped in behind the bar, offered to help serve drinks, and asked to borrow the bartender's name tag. Alex was struck almost immediately by how people's attitude towards him changed after he became "just one of the help." They were so rude to him that Alex eventually decided to become the world's most obnoxious bartender. Guys would come up and ask for a vodka-cranberry juice and he'd ask "what's in that?" Or if a woman asked for wine he would berate her about how wine was bad for her health and try to force her to accept a beer instead. Finally, Alex's friend got enough complaints that he had to reveal that the bartender was a close family friend playing a practical joke to prove a point. Alex said that for the rest of the night (now that they knew he was the friend of their rich hosts), everyone who'd been mean to him during the course of the night came up and apologized.

I just got a holiday card from the studio executives at Universal. That studio definitely wins the award for most eleborate Christmas card of the year. Check it out.

You can now remove the parenthetical "probably" from my last post. It happened.

Oh don't worry, it was much more painful watching the actual game. And the 30° temperature with a 10° windchill factor? Just icing on the cake! And paying $55 for the experience just brought the whole thing into the realm of the sublime.

I guess it is pretty cool that I can (probably) say I was at the game that got Norv Turner fired.

Actually, I did have a good time, in retrospect, even though I clearly remember not enjoying it at the time. In fact, I'm seriously considering going to the Cardinals game on December 24, if a rigorous set of conditions are met: Andrew's friend Russ can't go (he's the one who got Andrew the tickets), there is no snow, rain, or any other kind of precipitation, the temperature is not any colder than it was today, and (and this is a big one) the Redskins still have a chance at the playoffs.

Jeez Mike, I hope that dismal 9-7 outcome doesn't entirely turn you off to the idea of attending NFL games live! I felt your pain watching that Skins game via the 10-Minute Ticker. Yikes!
