Here's the latest from Everest climber Doug:
Hello all,
We've arrived safely and healthy in Namche Bazaar. We always thought of this trek in as the quick hike in to get to the real climb, but the trail has us working for it. We are doing 14 mile days and the trail often rises 2,000-5,000feet and back down again in a day. On our trip from Traksindo to Payele we dropped 4600 feet, immediately went back up 1800 feet, dropped another 600 feet and then slowly climbed up another 3200. It goes like this, but we are moving quickly and the terrain is magnificent. We've had light rains ever afternoon, but otherwise the weather is great. We have started running into other teams who will be up at Base Camp. A Canadian led team, an Indian Army team, a British team, and a team from Russia will be at Base Camp to climb Lhotse. Brant attempted a little Glasnotz with the Russians, and had the following lengthy and friendly conversation with them:
Brant: " So you guys are going to Lhotse. That's great. We're on our way to Everest."
Stoic Russian: "da"
Brant: "So I guess we'll be seeing you up at Base Camp?"
Stoic Russian: "da"
Brant: " All right then. See you up there."
Stoic Russian: -no answer-
I don't suppose we'll be spending much free time with the Stoic Russians."Stoic" Russian - I guess that's a little redundant. We stopped at the school on the way through Traksindo and spent some time with the kids. The conditions are definitely third world, but the children were incredibly enthusiastic and seemed to get a real thrill out of our visit. We are going to go climb Gokyo Ri and then Kala Pattar (both around 18,00ft) on the way into Base Camp just to continue our acclimatization. We've all managed to stay healthy which is a challenge considering the state of pollution in Katmandu and the gauntlet of tea houses with their Yak fueled fires. We're also all feeling strong and adjusting well. Though it's interesting. Today we moved very fast and felt very strong climbing the 2500 feet up to Namche which is at 11,000 feet, but that is only 2/3 of what
our summit day will be on Everest and at an altitude of almost 20,000 feet lower. A long way to go. I will probably not be able to send news again until I get the etroit/Luttrell Sat phone up and running at Base Camp. All the best until then.
