Bad Service?
An assistant here in the building showed us a receipt his boss asked him to include in his next expense report. In the space for tip, this agent had scrawled "fuck you." We are awaiting the back story on this one folks. stay tuned.

IGN's FilmForce has a pretty funny interview with Joe Pantoliano. Among other revelations, we find out that the weird hairstyle for his Ralph Cifaretto character on the Soprano's is actually based on Memento director Christopher Nolan. (Side-by-side comparison included.) This is only part one; part two is coming next week.

In honor of the beginning of the 2001 Major League Baseball season, I would like to start the day off with a funny little quote:
Clark Griffith, owner of the hapless Washington Senators, once said, "Fans like home runs and we have assembled a pitching staff to please our fans."

What do you get when you've got a guy with over 500 DVD's, and some amazing Photoshop skills? You get a really cool movie trivia site: FilmWise. Check out The Invisibles, which are really cool. The Oscar Moments contest is hilarious (and you can win a DVD by entering). But so far, the only one I've done really well at is the Distorted Reality. I got six out of eight without having to hit any of the "sharpen" buttons. (Of the other two, I hadn't seen one, and had barely seen the other one.) OK, I'm still playing and I just did Child's View, which was really easy; I got 8 out of 8. Anyway, check it out.

More praise for the Hypersonic XLC, this time from Saturday's Post. "I've been on 275 roller coasters, and I've never left one speechless."

Well, this weekend, I did something very cool, that ultimately resulted in something very stupid. My friend Shane and I set out on Sunday (at 6am) to climb 10,646 foot Mt. Baldy... in the snow. The difference is that when there's no snow, you have to take a trail around the side of Baldy and then walk up an assload of switchbacks to achieve the summit. Well, in the snow, that's not necessary, you just get a pair of crampons and front-point right up the face of the mountain. It was quite hairy. Most of the time we were climbing straight up a 50 degree pitch. Sometimes the pitch was so steep our knees were hitting the snow before our feet were. We went about 4,000 feet that way, achieved the summit, then sledded back down the face of the mountain on our butts. So it took about 3 hours to scale the face, and about 3 minutes to get back down. It was fun as hell.
Now, for the stupid bit. I'm very conscious of sunburn on mountains, I have all kinds of hats and things to cover my neck, etc. But they are all designed to stop sunlight from above. Unfortunately, I forgot that snow reflects sunlight very well, so I had pure sunlight hitting me straight in the face, at 9,000 feet, for about four hours. My face is bright red and really painfully sunburned pretty much from my forehead to my neck and from ear to ear. Damn this sucks.

Well, it was a very good short story, but certainly nothing that might ruin the movie for anyone. The movie was very loosely based on it. Almost all of the events in the story happen well before any of the events in the movie, and the one event that's the exception is given such a vague description in the story that it's nothing to worry about. Some bits and pieces of the short story ended up in the documents you can find on the film's official web page, which is not surprising, since the web page was designed by the same guy who wrote it.

Memento, such an awesome film by the way, one which I can't recommend highly enough, was based on a short story by the director's brother. And here it is. I haven't read it yet, although I'm about to, but I think I'd probably recommend seeing the movie first. But you might have to hurry; I don't know if Esquire archives their stories or not.
