Well, Doug has been AWOL for a while since he is above Camp 3 waiting for a break in the weather and away from the telecomunications hubs at base camp, so this update comes from DOug's mom, who has been culling what info. she can from the news. Here goes:
From Sherrill MacLaren (Doug's mom):
"We now have a report that Camp IV has been established by Douglas's team - possibly by their very fine Sherpa, Boca, who stayed with the team after
Babu's death. The following came off the internet:"
----------------
"Report from the Internet - I do not know what ABC means - at Base Camp? or somewhere very high.
Everest Status: North and South: 5/14/2001
"Some climbers are staying at ABC to get in line. However, some climbers have been there for a number of days and are going to need to go up or down. Look
for a line of climbers to form as soon as the weather breaks. The first summits in 2000 were on May 15th, and more climbers summitted Everest than ever before in 2000. Some climbers will leave, this happens every year. Other will stay. This year is different in that the avalanche danger is high. Also the Sherpas have not liked this year from the start. The high winds at the Summit, were causing some Sherpas climbers not to go high when asked (or told), Sherpas would simply turn around (not a bad idea). The High camp on the South is set for almost all expeditions. High camps on the North are set for some. What will be the most interesting is to see who leads. On the
South, we have many small expeditions this year. The plan was for the large Japanese expedition with numerous Sherpa climbers from Asian Trekking, including 11 time Summitter Apa Sherpa, to fix the route from Camp 4 to the Summit. This would pave the "yellow brick road" allowing others to follow with the main concern of getting back down, if they have enough energy to get to the Summit. NFB, Mountain Experience and IMG has now teamed up to fix the rope to the 200 meters above the Balcony."
