So uh, what the heck are these two clowns doing in Vietnam anyway?
Well I’ll tell ya… Short answer: How interesting would this travelogue be if we were touring Boise? That’s right, everything we do, we do for you… to paraphrase a Canadian “rock star” of ill repute. Long answer: It was a Monday night like most Monday nights, by which I mean it was dark. I was on the phone with my logistics and communications expert, Mike Schwartz, trying to figure out how we could top Europe ’98 and Cross Country ’99. What would we do for the first Tri-Llama Travelogue of the new Millennium? We went out to the Internet and started browsing Yahoo Travel for ideas. We knew we didn’t want to go to Europe again (much as we love it), and we quickly turned down South America, Africa, and Oceania (which we think is an ancient city that sank into the sea)... So we finally decided to tour Asia. But if you haven’t checked a map lately, let me be the first to tell you, Asia is one big Goddamn place. We had to narrow it down to something, and Vietnam seemed like the thing to do. Besides, we liked the idea of visiting the Third World because, well, someday things are gonna start going their way again and we want them to remember us fondly when they’re back on top. And, for scenic beauty and historical significance, it’s hard to do better than the “Big V.” And so, one year later, here we are: Lars (expedition leader), Mike (Coms and Logistics), and Harpoo (cook, stable boy, midget)… slowly making our way from one end of this country to the other as we attempt to find out what this place is all about. So, when your working day has gotcha down, open up your browser and join us for a little fun, sun, and humidity as we search for life-affirming anecdotes (and tchotchkes) to shower our friends and family with upon our triumphant return. See ya “In Country.” Lars and Mike
PS: We hope to update daily, but please understand that, technology being what it is, you might have to settle for much less than that. Don’t think we aren’t trying hard just because you haven’t seen an update in a couple days… it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re dead, lying in a ditch somewhere, with vast pools of—well, perhaps I’ve been graphic enough. I’d also like to point out to all Tri-Llama travel companions-past who were not able to join us this year, that we understand… Vietnam ain’t exactly the French Riviera. We won’t hold it against you. |
